The Origins of Pickleball
Pickleball originated in Washington State in 1965 when three friends – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum – were looking for something fun they could play together with their families. They combined elements from various other sports to create something new and unique – which they eventually called pickleball. At first, they didn’t give much thought to the name; it was simply a joke between them.
Why Pickles?
So where did the “pickles” come into play? Legend has it that after playing for some time, the group decided to call their game “pickle ball” as an homage to Pritchard’s dog named “Pickles”. Apparently he was often found running off with one of the balls during their games! Thus, over time, Pickles became synonymous with pickleball and his legacy lives on today through its namesake sport.
