Pickleball is one of the most popular sports in the United States and has been gaining traction around the world. It’s a game that combines elements from tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, making it an ideal activity for groups of all ages. But where did this fun sport actually come from? A History Lesson
The invention of pickleball can be traced back to 1965 in Washington state on Bainbridge Island. It was created by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum as an activity for their families during summer vacations. The game quickly gained popularity among other islanders until eventually spreading to different parts of America.
Gaining Momentum
By 1972, tournaments were being held by local communities throughout Washington State with more than 100 players participating in each competition! Soon enough word about this new game began to spread outside Washington State leading to people organizing tournaments around the country as well as Canada and Europe. In 1984 USAPA (United States Of America Pickleball Association) was formed which officially established rules for playing pickleball within North America .
