Pickleball is a popular racquet sport that combines elements from tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Let’s take a look at the origins of this beloved recreational activity.
The Birthplace of Pickleball
It was 1965 when three men in Washington State created a backyard game that would later become known as pickleball. Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum were searching for something fun they could play with their families; they combined aspects from badminton, ping-pong and other sports to create an entertaining new pastime involving paddles and plastic balls with holes. The trio named their invention after Pritchard’s dog “Pickles” who often chased after errant balls!
Growth & Expansion
Word spread quickly about this new exciting game; within just two years over 1 million people had learned to play before 1970 rolled around! By 1976 backyard games were being played across America – even President Ford enjoyed playing pickleball on White House grounds! Today there are thousands of active courts located everywhere from Europe to Australia – not to mention championship tournaments held throughout the United States each year.
