What is Pickleball and Where Did it Come From?
Pickleball has been one of the fastest growing sports in recent years, but many people don’t know much about its origins. This unique game combines elements from badminton, tennis, and table tennis and has become increasingly popular among all age groups. But where did this quirky sport get its name? Let’s take a look at the history of pickleball to find out how it came to be.
The Origins of Pickleball
In 1965, three fathers in Washington state were looking for an activity that their children could play together. The men decided to combine their favorite games – table tennis, badminton and tennis – into one new game they called “pickle-ball”. It was named after the family dog Pickles who loved chasing after errant balls during their games!
The rules for pickleball have evolved over time as more people started playing it around the country. The USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) was founded in 1984 and continues to regulate official tournaments held throughout North America today.
Modern-Day Popularity
Today pickle ball is gaining popularity among players of all ages due to its accessibility and fun factor! With just two or four players needed per court, anyone can jump right into a quick match even with minimal equipment or experience required. Its low impact nature also makes it easy on aging joints while still providing plenty of exercise opportunities as you move around hitting volleys back-and-forth across the net with your opponent(s).
Conclusion
Pickle ball may seem like an odd name for a sport but there’s no mistaking its appeal these days! Thanks to three dads from Washington State we now enjoy this exciting combination sport which requires less equipment than most other racquet sports yet still provides plenty of enjoyment for everyone involved. So next time you’re playing pickle ball remember why we call it that: because ‘Pickles’ loved chasing those errant balls during his dad’s original matches!
