Unravelling the Origins of Pickleball
Pickleball has become one of the most popular sports in North America, with more people playing it than ever before. But how did this sport come to be? In this blog post, we’ll explore the origins of pickleball and discover who invented it and why.
The Birth of a New Sport
Pickleball first began in 1965 when three friends were looking for something to do on a hot summer day. The men – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum – had trouble finding any activities that could keep them entertained without getting too hot or too tiring. So they decided to create their own game using some basic materials like badminton racquets, a perforated plastic ball, and an old badminton court net which was lowered from 3’6″ down to 34″. They called their game “pickleball”, after Pritchard’s dog Pickles who would often chase after the ball during games!
Popularity Grows Across North America
After inventing the game in Washington State, word quickly spread about pickleball throughout neighbouring states and Canada. As more people heard about it and began playing themselves, its popularity grew rapidly over time. Today there are estimated to be over two million players across North America! This growth can also be attributed to its easy-to-learn ruleset as well as its adaptability: while originally played outdoors on grass or sand courts, today many indoor gyms offer dedicated pickleball courts made out of wood or composite material surfaces.
Conclusion
Pickleball is now one of the fastest growing sports in North America thanks largely due to its ease-of-play combined with great fun factor for all ages. Its beginnings date back nearly 60 years ago when three friends sought out ways beat boredom on a hot summer day by creating their own unique game – forever changing recreational history!
