Cricket is one of the world’s most popular sports, played in over 100 countries around the globe. But what about here in America? Does the United States have a cricket team?
The answer is yes! While it may not be as well-known or widely followed as baseball or football, cricket has been gaining ground lately in the US. Currently, two teams play at an international level – USA Cricket and Major League Cricket.
USA Cricket
USA Cricket is an organization founded by U.S.-based players and administrators with a mission to grow cricket across America. It was created in 2019 with the backing of World Sport Group (WSG) and International Management Group (IMG). The organization works closely with both local leagues and national governing bodies to promote, develop, and manage all aspects of professional cricket within North America. As far as teams go, USA Cricket organizes regional competition among its 30+ member clubs nationwide, culminating in regional championships or special tournaments like “T20” competitions throughout the year.
Major League Cricket
Major League Cricket (MLC) is another association dedicated to growing cricket on American soil since 2020 when it was established by former Indian Premier league stars Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo, along with other investors from India and Canada. MLC serves as an umbrella for all existing local leagues across different states such as California, New York State, etc., comprising of 6 franchise-based city-level teams competing against each other for glory during three annual seasons starting from Spring 2021 onwards. Unlike USA Cricket, MLC operates independently without any ties to global governing bodies like ICC but holds similar goals such as promoting grassroots development while providing entertainment through competitive matches between highly talented cricketers playing out their dreams on American soil.
