The Origins of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, along with his friends Bill Bell and Barney McCallum on Bainbridge Island near Seattle. During one hot summer day when all three were searching for something fun to do, they decided to create a new sport by combining elements from badminton, tennis and table tennis into one game. They took out their ping pong paddles, some conventional badminton birdies (shuttlecocks) and started playing on their own makeshift court!
How Did It Get Its Name?
There are multiple theories about how exactly pickleball got its name but no one knows for sure which one is true. One theory suggests that the game was named after Pritchard’s dog “Pickles” who would often chase after the ball during games! Another theory suggests that it could have been derived from the phrase “pickled herring” which was used as slang at the time to describe someone who was inexperienced or not very skilled at sports – thus making this new invention perfect for beginners!
