Pickleball is a popular game that is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. It’s an entertaining and fast-paced sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. But you may be wondering – why is it called pickleball?
Origins of Pickleball
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, Washington. The original inventors were Joel Pritchard (a congressman from Washington), Bill Bell (an industrialist), Barney McCallum (a lawyer) and Joan Pritchard (Joel’s wife). According to legend, the game was named after their family dog “Pickles” who would chase the errant balls during games.
How To Play Pickleball
Today pickleball is played with two to four players; one player stands across from another on either side of a net that divides the court into equal halves. Players use solid paddles made out of wood or graphite to hit a plastic ball over the net onto their opponents side of the court. Points are scored when an opponent fails to hit the ball back over so it lands inbounds or they are unable to return it without stepping outside their designated area on court. The first team or individual to reach 11 points wins!
