Early Beginnings of Team Handball
The origins of team handball can be traced back to late 19th century Europe when it emerged as a hybrid between field hockey and water polo. At first, there were no standardized rules or court size and players used any type of ball they could find in order to play the game.
It wasn’t until the early 20th century that German teacher Max Heiser began organizing official matches with formalized rules based on his own set of regulations which he published in 1917. Heiser is credited with perfecting modern team handball as we know it today – an 11-a-side indoor sport played on a 40m x 20m court with two 30 minute halves and goal posts at each end.
The International Expansion of Team Handball
In 1925, Germany hosted the first international match between Denmark and Austria – marking an important milestone in the history of team handball as it signified its emergence as an international sport beyond Europe’s borders. Over time, more countries adopted their own version of Heiser’s ruleset which eventually led to the formation of The International Amateur Hand Ball Federation (IAHF) following World War II in 1946 – making it one of oldest sports governing bodies still active today.
